Description:

The wandering broadhead planarian (Bipalium adventitium) is a land flatworm thought to be native to Asia [1]. It is one of the "hammerhead worms," named for the wide, fan-shaped head that sets this group apart from common worms. Identification:

This flatworm has a long, flat, slimy body that grows up to about 3 inches (8 cm) long. The body is light tan to yellow-brown, with a single dark brown stripe running down the middle of the back. That stripe stops short of the head and does not reach it. The head is shaped like a fan or shovel, and there is no dark band or collar behind it [1]. Look for it in moist, shaded places: under rocks, logs, leaf litter, flower pots, and garden debris where the soil stays damp [1]. It is hardest to spot in dry, hot weather, when it stays hidden underground. The best time to find it is on wet days or cool, damp mornings, when it sometimes ventures onto sidewalks, driveways, and patios out in the open [1].

Habitat:

The wandering broadhead planarian needs damp conditions and shade. It lives in the top layer of moist soil and hides under rocks, logs, leaf litter, mulch, and flower pots during the day [1]. It turns up in suburban yards, gardens, plant nurseries, and shaded woodlands.

This flatworm is a predator. Its main prey is the earthworm, which it tracks underground and overpowers even when the worm is many times its own size [2]. It will also eat slugs and snails in smaller numbers [1]. Thought to be native to Asia, it was first found in North America in California in 1943 and is now widespread across the continent, especially in the northeastern United States [1].



Reproduction:

This flatworm usually arrives in a new yard hidden in the soil of potted plants, or in mulch and compost moved from an infested area [5]. So the most likely way it reaches your property is on plants and soil products you bring home. Once present, it spreads slowly on its own through moist soil and leaf litter.

Each worm is a hermaphrodite, meaning a single individual has both male and female parts, so even one worm can start a population [4]. It breeds once a year and lays small egg capsules. Each capsule hatches about three weeks later and releases roughly one to eight young [4]. The worms can also store sperm, which helps a lone arrival reproduce after it settles in [4].

These worms can also regrow from pieces of their body. If one is cut or torn, the fragments may each grow into a new worm ? so cutting them apart only makes the problem worse [5]. This is why proper disposal (below) matters.



Impact and Damage:

This flatworm can be a nuisance to people and pets. Its skin carries tetrodotoxin, the same powerful natural poison found in pufferfish [3]. The worm cannot inject it, but the slime can irritate skin, eyes, or the mouth, so you should not handle it with bare hands [1]. The toxin is concentrated in the head and in the egg capsules [3]. A pet that swallows one of these worms could become sick, so keep curious dogs and cats away from them.

For gardeners and natural area stewards, the bigger concern is what it eats. The worm preys on earthworms [2], which loosen soil, recycle leaf litter, and help plants grow. In a garden or farm, fewer earthworms can mean poorer soil over time. The worm also uses its toxin to subdue earthworms: once it pins a worm down, the prey is paralyzed within about a minute [3]. Similar species:

The wandering broadhead planarian is most easily confused with other hammerhead worms. The greenhouse planarian (Bipalium kewense) is the closest look-alike, but it is much longer ? often 8 inches or more ? and has several dark stripes down its back plus a dark collar or neck band just behind the head, which the wandering broadhead planarian lacks [1]. Other land planarians in the region tend to be smaller, lack the broad fan-shaped head, or have a different stripe pattern [1]. When in doubt, the key features to check are the head shape, the number of stripes, and whether a dark collar sits behind the head.

  3. Never cut or chop a worm to kill it ? the pieces can each grow into a new worm [5].
  4. Reduce damp hiding spots: remove unneeded debris, logs, and standing pots, and let the soil surface dry out.
  5. Inspect new plants, potting soil, mulch, and compost before bringing them home, and avoid these products from areas known to have hammerhead worms [5].
  6. Natural area crews can scout shaded, moist sites across a preserve, hand-remove worms during damp weather, and prioritize clearing small, isolated populations before they spread.
