Similar species:

Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) is a native climbing vine that grows in the same places and is constantly confused with poison ivy. The easy difference is the leaf: Virginia creeper almost always has five leaflets spreading from one point, while poison ivy has three [1][2].

Boxelder (Acer negundo) is a native maple whose young plants have compound leaves with three to five leaflets that look a lot like poison ivy. It is told apart by leaf arrangement: boxelder leaves are opposite (in pairs across from each other), while poison ivy leaves are alternate [1].

Fragrant sumac (Rhus aromatica) is a native shrub that also has leaves of three. It is distinguished because its middle leaflet has no stalk (it sits directly against the other two), the leaves smell sweet when crushed, and the plant does not climb [1].

Blackberries and raspberries (Rubus species) have leaves with three leaflets too, but their stems (canes) are armed with thorns or prickles, which poison ivy never has [2].
