Description:

Eurasian collared dove (Streptopelia decaocto) is a pale, chunky dove from Asia that spread across Europe through the 1900s and reached North America in the 1980s after escaping captivity in the Caribbean [1][2]. It is now one of the fastest-spreading birds on the continent, turning up at feeders, farms, and town edges across most of the United States [2]. Identification:

The Eurasian collared dove is a medium-large dove, about 12 to 13 inches long ? noticeably bigger and stockier than the native mourning dove [1][4]. Its body is pale sandy gray to buff, with a slim black half-collar across the back of the neck, edged in white. The bill is black, the eye is deep red, and the legs are reddish. In flight and when perched, look for a broad, square-tipped tail with white corners and a dark base underneath, plus wingtips that are darker than the rest of the wing [1][4].

This dove does not migrate, so it can be found year-round. It is easiest to notice from late winter into summer, when males give a steady, three-note coo ? often described as "coo-COO-cup" ? from rooftops, wires, and treetops [1]. Habitat:

The Eurasian collared dove is native to Asia and spread on its own across the Middle East and Europe during the 1900s [1]. It was introduced to the Bahamas in the mid-1970s through an accidental release by a pet dealer, reached Florida by the early 1980s, and has since spread across most of North America [1][2].

It favors open and partly open country tied closely to people ? farmland, suburban yards, parks, hedgerows, and the edges of towns, anywhere scattered trees for nesting sit near a reliable food supply such as grain or bird feeders [1][4]. It avoids dense, unbroken forest and the heavily built-up cores of large cities [1][4]. Because it leans on grain and feeders, its populations build fastest where people unintentionally provide food.



Reproduction:

Eurasian collared doves usually arrive on a property simply by flying in. Young birds wander long distances to settle in new areas, and this restless dispersal is how the species crossed the continent so quickly [2]. Pairs nest in yard and street trees, on building ledges, and in dense shrubs, often within sight of a feeder [1][4].

Each nest holds just 2 eggs, but pairs nest again and again ? three or more broods a year where the climate is mild, and nearly year-round in the warm south [1][4]. Both parents take turns warming the eggs for about 15 days, and chicks leave the nest roughly 18 days after hatching. Young birds can raise families of their own by their first spring [1]. This fast turnover lets a handful of birds grow into a local flock within a season or two [2]. Adults feed mainly on seeds and grain, with some fruit and whatever feeders offer [1].



Impact and Damage:

For most homeowners, the Eurasian collared dove is more of a nuisance than a danger. The birds gather at feeders in numbers and can crowd out smaller native birds, and they readily eat and foul grain and pet food left in the open [1][4]. They pose little direct risk to people.

The larger worry is disease spread among birds at shared feeders and birdbaths. Eurasian collared doves can carry Trichomonas gallinae, a throat parasite that is often deadly to native doves and to the hawks and falcons that eat infected birds [4]. They can also carry West Nile virus, but experimental work shows they are only weak amplifiers of the virus and likely matter mainly where they are very abundant [3].

As an extremely successful colonizer, the Eurasian collared dove may compete with native doves ? especially the mourning dove ? for food and nest sites. Similar species:

Mourning dove (native) is the look-alike people confuse most often. It is easily mistaken for a young collared dove because both are slim gray-brown doves, but the mourning dove is smaller and warmer brown, has a long pointed tail rather than a square one, shows black spots on the wing, and never has a black collar on its neck [1][4].

Ringed turtle dove (also called African collared dove) is a tame, often escaped cage bird that also wears a black neck collar. It is easily confused with the Eurasian collared dove, but it is smaller and paler, has a shorter tail and paler ? not dark ? wingtips, and gives a soft rolling call instead of the Eurasian's clear three-note coo [1].

Rock pigeon (the common city pigeon) shares the same towns and farmyards. It is much larger and stockier, comes in many colors from gray to white to rusty, lacks any black neck collar, and has a very different blunt-headed shape [1].

White-winged dove overlaps in the southern part of the range. It is roughly collared dove size but shows a bold white stripe along the closed wing, a blue ring of bare skin around the eye, and a rounded tail, and it has no black neck collar [1].

Signs to watch for:
