Medusahead (Taeniatherum caput-medusae) is an invasive winter annual grass native to the Mediterranean region of Europe and western Asia [1][5]. It was introduced to the United States in the 1880s and has taken over huge areas of rangeland in the western states, forming dense stands with stiff, bristly, long-awned seed heads that look like the snake-haired Medusa [1]. MISIN tracks it as an early-detection target ? it is not yet established in the Great Lakes region ? because it crowds out native plants and forage, builds a thick thatch that fuels wildfires, and its barbed seeds injure grazing animals [1][2][4].
Habit:
Medusahead is a slender annual grass, usually 6 to 20 inches (15 to 50 cm) tall, that grows in small tufts with only a few narrow, rolled leaves [1][3]. Its signature is the seed head: a stiff, bristly spike packed with long, straight awns (needle-like bristles) that are green in spring and dry to a pale, twisted, spreading tangle ? the "Medusa's head" look [1]. The awns are barbed and rough to the touch, and the seed head stays whole on the plant instead of breaking apart [2][3]. Medusahead also stays green later into the summer than most other annual grasses, so a patch that is still green and bristly after nearby grasses have dried is a clue [3].
It is easiest to spot in late spring and early summer when the awned heads form, and again in summer when dead, straw-colored plants leave a pale, thick layer of thatch on the ground [1][3].

Habitat:
Medusahead grows on open, disturbed, sunny ground ? rangelands, grasslands, pastures, old fields, roadsides, and oak woodlands [1][3]. It does best on fine-textured, clay-rich soils that hold moisture into spring, in areas that get roughly 10 to 40 inches of rain a year [1].
It is native to the Mediterranean region of Europe and western Asia and was introduced to North America, where it has spread widely across the western states [1][5]. It is not yet established in the Great Lakes region ? for example, no populations are confirmed in Wisconsin ? which is why finding and reporting it early matters here [2].
Reproduction:
Medusahead is an annual grass that spreads only by seed, but it makes staggering amounts of it ? a dense stand can drop up to about 6,000 seeds per square foot [2]. The seeds are the main way it travels: each keeps a long, barbed awn that snags onto animal fur, wool, socks and pant legs, and vehicle tires, so it hitches rides to new ground [1]. Grazing animals also swallow the seeds and pass them, still able to sprout, in their dung days later [1]. Seeds move in hay, straw, and contaminated soil as well.
Most seeds germinate in fall, and the young plants sit low through winter, then shoot up, flower, set seed, and die in late spring and early summer [1][3]. Most seeds sprout within 2 to 3 years, so the buried seed bank does not last as long as some weeds' [3]. The key to control is stopping seed set: remove plants before the awned heads mature and drop seed [1].
Impact and Damage:
Medusahead is one of the most damaging rangeland weeds in the western United States, and its harm comes in several forms [1]. It forms dense stands ? over 100 plants per square foot ? that crowd out native grasses and wildflowers; across a large study of shrub?grassland communities, the more medusahead there was, the fewer native plants and the lower the plant diversity [1][4]. It even outcompetes and replaces cheatgrass, another aggressive invasive grass [1].
Its tissues are loaded with silica (a gritty, glass-like mineral), which makes it unpalatable to livestock and wildlife and lets its dead stems pile up into a thick thatch that takes two or more years to rot [1][3]. That thatch smothers other plants, changes how nutrients cycle, and adds fuel that makes wildfires more frequent and intense [1][3]. Similar species:
Medusahead is a bristly, long-awned grass, and a few other grasses with awned seed heads can look similar. These comparisons come from published sources, since MISIN does not yet track look-alikes for it.
Foxtail barley (Hordeum jubatum) is the closest match ? a common grass with long, soft, bristly awns. The key difference is that foxtail barley's seed head breaks apart as it ripens, while medusahead's seed head stays whole on the plant [2].
Squirreltail (Elymus elymoides) is a native bunchgrass with a similar bristly, awned head, but its seed head also shatters and scatters its seeds as it dries, unlike medusahead's persistent head [2][3].
Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) is the other widespread invasive annual grass of dry, disturbed ground, but its seed head is a soft, drooping, purplish cluster rather than a stiff, upright, bristly spike, and it dries out earlier in the season while medusahead stays green longer [1][3].
