Description:

Killer shrimp (Dikerogammarus villosus) is a small but aggressive shrimp-like animal ? an amphipod ? native to the Ponto-Caspian region of eastern Europe, around the Black, Caspian, and Azov seas [2]. Identification:

Killer shrimp looks like an oversized version of the small "scuds" (shrimp-like amphipods) already living in North American lakes and streams. It has a curved, side-flattened body, two pairs of antennae, and many legs. What sets it apart is its size and markings: it grows up to about 1.2 inches (30 mm) long ? several times bigger than most native scuds ? and often shows bold dark stripes or bands, though color ranges from nearly clear to almost solid dark [1][2]. Look closely at the tail end (an area called the urosome): killer shrimp has a pair of raised, cone-shaped bumps tipped with small spines that native scuds do not have [1]. For its size, it also has unusually large, powerful jaws [1].

It would be easiest to notice in summer, when adults reach full size and are most active in warm water [2]. Because it can survive out of water in damp gear for up to several days, the most likely place to first spot it is clinging to a net, anchor rope, or boat after you leave an infested water body [1].

Habitat:

In its home range around the Black, Caspian, and Azov seas, killer shrimp lives in fresh and slightly salty water [2]. Since the early 1990s it has spread through the rivers and canals of central and western Europe, turning up in one country after another [2].

It is a tough generalist. It lives in lakes, rivers, and canals with slow-moving water and tolerates a wide range of temperature, saltiness, and oxygen levels ? settling on almost any bottom except bare sand [1][2]. It favors hard surfaces to shelter in, clinging to rocks, hardened banks, mussel beds, and mats of algae ? which also makes it easy to move by accident on gear and boats [1]. It is not established anywhere in North America, but this broad tolerance is exactly why experts flag it as a strong candidate to survive in the Great Lakes [2].



Reproduction:

Killer shrimp rarely has to travel far on its own ? people move it. Adults and young cling to boats, trailers, anchors, nets, waders, and other wet gear, and because they can stay alive for up to several days in damp conditions, they easily hitch a ride to a new lake or river [1]. Over long distances the main worry is ballast water: a ship takes on water ? and any animals in it ? at one port and releases it at another, the pathway experts expect could carry killer shrimp across the ocean to the Great Lakes [2].

Once in the water, it breeds readily. Killer shrimp earns its name. It is a fierce predator that attacks and kills a wide range of native water animals ? native scuds, insect larvae, worms, and even fish eggs and young fish ? and it often kills far more than it eats, shredding prey and leaving it behind [1][3]. In European rivers it has wiped out native amphipods and even pushed out earlier invaders, sometimes becoming almost the only amphipod left [3].

Because those small animals are food for fish and form the base of the food web, losing them can ripple upward and harm fish populations and the fishing that depends on them [4]. Demon shrimp (Dikerogammarus haemobaphes) is a close Ponto-Caspian relative and fellow potential invader that looks very similar. Its cone-shaped tail bumps are smaller and lower than the killer shrimp's [2].

Dikerogammarus bispinosus is another near-identical relative from the same region; telling it apart from killer shrimp reliably takes close examination or genetic testing [2].
