Identification:
Beech scale itself is easy to miss ? each insect is barely a millimeter long ? but a heavy infestation is not: look for patches of American or European beech bark that appear dusted or streaked with white, cottony wool, especially on smooth, rough, or previously wounded bark near old branch stubs [2]. This wax coating is most conspicuous from late summer through winter, once the young scales have settled in and begun producing it, and it tends to build up over several years before the tree shows other symptoms [2][3]. Hosts:
Beech scale is native to Europe and western Asia [1]. In North America it feeds on American beech (Fagus grandifolia) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica), and it favors moist, shaded stands; trees around 25 years and older are especially susceptible [2]. It has spread across much of eastern North America since its introduction, reaching as far west as Wisconsin, and is established in Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont, among other states [1][2].
Life Cycle:
Beech scale most often arrives on a property already established nearby ? the young, mobile stage (called a crawler) can be blown by wind or carried by birds and other wildlife from an infested tree to a new one, so a beech in your yard can pick up an infestation from a wild tree in a nearby woodlot with no help from people at all [3].
Every beech scale is female; there are no males, and each one reproduces on her own [1]. Adults lay strings of 4 to 7 pale yellow eggs on the bark in midsummer, then die [1]. Eggs hatch from late summer into early winter, and the newly hatched crawlers settle onto the bark, molt into an immobile stage, and begin producing the white wax that gives the infestation away [1]. - Natural-area crews: focus on identifying and protecting apparently resistant trees within a stand (a small percentage of American beech naturally resist the scale) rather than trying to treat every tree, and remove hazard trees near trails, campsites, and other high-use areas before branches or trunks fail
