Description:
Oak wilt (Bretziella fagacearum, formerly Ceratocystis fagacearum) is a fungus that causes a deadly disease of oak trees [1][2]. The fungus clogs the tubes a tree uses to move water, so infected oaks wilt and die ? red oaks often in just a few weeks [1][2]. Identification:
Oak wilt is a disease, so you identify it by what it does to the tree rather than by a plant or animal you can pick up. The clearest sign is rapid wilting and browning of the leaves, usually starting at the top of the canopy and moving down [1][2]. On each leaf, the browning often begins at the tip and outer edges and works inward toward the stalk, while the base may stay green [1][2]. Infected red oaks frequently drop a lot of leaves quickly, so you may see a carpet of half-green, half-brown leaves under the tree in summer [1]. Red oaks (the group with pointed, bristle-tipped leaf lobes) get sick fast and can die in a few weeks to a few months; white oaks (rounded leaf lobes) decline slowly over years and sometimes survive [2].
Oak wilt is easiest to notice in summer, from about June through August, when healthy oaks are in full leaf and a sick one suddenly browns and sheds [1][2]. Habitat:

The third way is the one people control directly: moving the fungus long distances in oak firewood and logs cut from infected trees [1]. For control, timing matters enormously. Oak wilt is not a danger to people or pets ? it only harms oak trees [1]. For a homeowner, though, it can be devastating: a healthy, mature red oak can wilt and die within a single season, and because the fungus travels through connected roots, losing one tree often means losing several nearby [1][2]. Standing dead oaks then become a fall and limb hazard near homes, and removing large trees is costly [2].
In woodlots and natural areas, oak wilt can kill oaks across a stand, opening up the canopy and reducing the acorns that deer, turkeys, squirrels, and many other animals depend on [2][3]. Because oaks are a keystone group in eastern forests, widespread loss reshapes the whole woodland and is expensive to manage in urban forests, parks, and timber stands [2]. Catching and containing new pockets early is the most effective way to limit this damage [3].
Similar species:
Two-lined chestnut borer (Agrilus bilineatus) is a native beetle whose larvae tunnel under the bark of stressed oaks, causing crown dieback that can look like oak wilt. It differs in that the browning usually starts on scattered branches and progresses over more than one year, rather than the rapid, whole-canopy wilt of oak wilt, and you can find its D-shaped exit holes and zig-zag tunnels under the bark.
Bur oak blight (Tubakia iowensis) is a fungal leaf disease, mainly of bur oak, that causes brown leaf spots and patches and some leaf death. Unlike oak wilt, it develops slowly over the season, rarely kills the tree outright, and affected dead leaves often hang on the tree into winter.
Oak anthracnose (caused by Apiognomonia and related fungi) browns and distorts oak leaves, especially in cool, wet springs, but the damage is concentrated on the lower and inner canopy and does not cause the rapid, top-down whole-tree wilt of oak wilt.
