Description:
Perennial pea (Lathyrus latifolius) is a climbing vine in the pea family, native to south and east-central Europe and northwest Africa [8]. It has been grown in North American gardens since the early 1700s for its showy pink pea flowers, and has escaped to naturalize along roadsides, fencerows, and field edges across much of the United States and Canada [6][7]. The leaves are just as distinctive, because there are so few parts to them. A separate risk screening of the same species scored it 16, or "High Potential Risk" [5]. Those two assessments sit in real tension, and both come from the same organization: what it does where it takes hold is serious, but where it takes hold is usually already disturbed. No dollar figure for economic loss from this species was found in the sources reviewed, and no peer-reviewed study quantifying native-plant displacement was located.
Similar species:
Perennial pea belongs to a group of winged-stemmed climbing peas that are easy to mix up. Botanists once treated it as a variety of flat pea, which is a fair measure of how close the two are [8].
Flat pea (Lathyrus sylvestris) is the closest match by far ? another winged-stemmed perennial pea with pinkish flowers, two leaflets per leaf, and climbing tendrils. Check three things. Flat pea's leaflets are distinctly long and narrow, while perennial pea's are broad and oval [1][9]. Flat pea's stipules ? the flaps where the leaf meets the stem ? are narrow, mostly 1 to 2 mm wide, against perennial pea's broad 3 to 10 mm [9]. And flat pea's flowers are smaller, about 13 to 20 mm long, against perennial pea's 18 to 25 mm [9]. MISIN tracks flat pea as its own species.
Sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus) is the garden annual, and it causes confusion mostly by name ? perennial pea is often sold and labeled as a sweet pea [3][6]. It also has winged stems and similar-sized flowers, so the flowers will not settle it [10]. The life cycle will: sweet pea lives a single year and dies, leaving nothing behind, while perennial pea comes back year after year from creeping underground stems [4][6][10]. A pea in the same spot every spring, spreading outward, is not sweet pea.
Meadow vetchling (Lathyrus pratensis) is a smaller climbing pea of similar habitats. It is told apart by its stems, which lack the conspicuous wings, and by size: its flowers are 10 to 15 mm long against perennial pea's 18 to 25 mm, and its pods are 20 to 50 mm against 40 to 100 mm [1].

Signs to watch for:
- Vines with broadly winged stems scrambling over fences, shrubs, and roadside banks, or mounding on open disturbed ground [1][2]

- Get the roots out. Cutting the plant off at the soil surface only works temporarily, because the root keeps sprouting [2]. The creeping underground stems are the plant; the vine is just what you can see.
- Cut or pull before the pods ripen in late summer so no new seed is set, and bag the pods rather than composting them [2].
- Watch the ground after you dig. Digging is likely to trigger seed germination, so expect a flush of seedlings in the disturbed soil and plan to come back for them [2].
- Replant the bare spot or cover it after removal ? leaving open ground invites it back [2].
- Wear gloves, and keep the pods away from children, pets, and livestock ? the seeds are toxic [3][5].
- Natural area crews: take out small outlying patches first, since the plant creeps rather than jumping long distances and outliers are what start new infestations [5]. Treat a patch as one connected root network rather than counting stems, plan for repeat visits across several seasons, and pay attention to roadsides and clearings, where it establishes [2].
