Invasive Tree Species

These courses represent key species which pose a significant threat to natural resources. Completing these training courses will provide you with the knowledge to identify and report these important threats.

Black Alder

Deciduous, medium-size tree that is a member of the Birch (Betulaceae) family. Capable of displacing native vegetation and nitrogen fixation. It has been planted on highly disturbed or infertile sites and for windbreaks.

Black Locust

Deciduous, medium-size tree that is a member of the Pea (Fabaceae) family. The nitrogen fixing capacity of this species may alter soil chemistry and subsequent nutrient cycling of forest systems.

Callery Pear

Deciduous tree that is a member of the Rose (Rosaceae) family. It was introduced to North America as an ornamental.

Norway Maple

Medium sized, perennial tree that is a member of the Maple (Aceraceae) family. It can create dense shade, monopolizes soil moisture, regenerates prolifically under its own canopy, and reduces overall plant diversity on a site.

Tree Of Heaven

Deciduous small to large tree that is a member of the Quassia (Simaroubaceae) family. It is capable of extensive cloning and has allelopathic properties. Introduced as an ornamental because it grew quickly and was considered very attractive.
